This weekend I decided to give you guys a run down of the favorite decor pieces that I’ve picked up this year. Now I have to tell you that I’m not the best when it comes to decor, in fact I’m pretty dire at getting anything to match either a color or theme, I seem to be missing that ‘girl sense’ of how to decorate a room or a piece of furniture to make it look homely and stylish, hell I can’t even decorate a Xmas tree without it looking like the Xmas fairy threw up on it! But….with the help of my friends I’m getting better at this stuff, as you will see from the pictures below, let me know what you think of any of these. 🙂 So, here are some faves from this year, in no particular order………
- Bookends / Books
I picked up these bookends at Ross, I think they were about $10 for the set and I had been looking for bookends for a while, since I’ve picked up these I’ve seen about 5 other sets that I may still get 🙂 I also love books both new and old so picking up old books as decor from junk shops is always a good time.
This was a bargain, an old guy down the street was having a yard sale and on a trip to the shop to grab milk I came home with this little gem for only $10. I think it goes well on my newspaper covered dresser, what do you think? (see, I’m learning the theme stuff!).
3. Clock / Picture Frame
I fell in love with this battered metal clock at Home Goods, I love the color and managed to pick up another blue piece so that it at least looked like it matched something in the living room 😉 I think it complements the bare wood theme on our TV console really well. The picture frame I got from a curb alert on a local free page and it was just right for displaying our wedding photo.
4. Bird Cages
I found these two bird cages on sale in Joann’s back in the spring, I have a bookcase on my stairs filled with pictures of me and hubby on our travels and I grabbed these thinking they would be great to store more ‘memories’, they’ve since started collecting things like ticket stubs, drink stirrer, postcards and even a Hawaiian lei, I love that I can look at these things every time I go up the stairs :).
5. Metal Decor
These two I found in TJ Maxx, and to be honest I’m still unsure if I even like them lol but I usually work with the plan of putting them somewhere until I decide if I love or hate them so for now they can hang out on my dresser.
6. Zen Bathroom
There are a lot of bits and pieces in this one, I decorated the powder room at the beginning of the year and decided to go with a ‘Zen’ theme, I loved the print that I bought of Etsy and picked up a frame on 1/2 off at Michael’s. I found the elephant, Buddha, plants and the letter N at TJ Maxx, the small canvas I made myself with my Silhouette Curio and the snail I picked up at a local junk store, my late grandma had a collection of ceramic snails in her powder room and this one just jumped out at me 🙂 And finally there is a very old copy of poetry by Shelly as I like to offer intellectual reading material in the bathroom ;).
7. Wooden Tray
This piece I bought from my friend, I knew I loved it but had absolutely no idea what to do with it! This week I’ve sprayed some glass bottles with Sea Glass Spray by Krylon and added some pot pouri but it looks bare and not very interesting, I think I may have to ask around for help with this one, any ideas would be welcome!
8. Mug Holder
This is another piece I bought from my friend (the ‘interior designer’), I knew I wanted it but it sat against the wall of my dining room for weeks while I toyed with the idea of painting it or leaving it as it was and also what to put in it, I finally settled on hanging it above my coffee station to hold my random mug collection.
9. Giant Chess Pieces
Finally we have these giant King & Queen chess pieces that I snagged from Ross, I knew as soon as I saw these that they would look perfect on my Union Jack end table in the living room and I believe I was right on this one!
Would love to hear what you think about these, am I getting there with honing my girl sense and being able to spot good decor buys? Or should I just stick to the furniture painting and offer to pay my awesome ‘interior designer’ friend and neighbor to come in and decorate for me? 😉
